Tip
of the Month: UNIX Distributed Printing Service Improved, Cost Reduced
Reminder: There is no longer any host fee for using UNIX distributed printers. Thanks to the successful conversion to CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) and Linux-based servers, the Computing Infrastructure Technologies Group was able to retire a number of outdated systems and software. Lab organizations can now have their UNIX distributed printers managed for $20 per printer per month. This fee pays for a robust, centrally supported server environment and the addition of the PrintPro driver software which adds quite a bit of value to the open source version of CUPS. "One real advantage is much better print driver support with our UNIX distributed printing service because it has built-in drivers for virtually any network printer,” said CUPS administrator Sandra Wittenbrock “It also has filters for printing many file types, like pdf, gif, jpg and some complex postscript, which the old Distributed Printing system did not. For example, when printing a text file with Lprng to an HP printer, a filter must be specified for line wraps. With CUPS, this filter is automatically used, without the need to specify it. Another advantage is fast throughput." Read additional information. Contact the Help Desk at x4357 to request the addition of a printer to
