Netscape
7 Released, But It's Not Ready for Prime Time
The
production version of Netscape 7 has been released, but initial testing
at the Lab shows that the glitches outweigh the benefits so far.
Mark Rosenberg, head of the Computing Infrastructure Technologies Group,
tested the new version for a few days and reported that a problem with a
pre-release version persists in the production version -- it still deletes
local mail folders stored on the computers of IMAP email users.
"I lost over 10 MB of local mail in normal usage in just a few hours,"
Mark noted. "In some cases it created new folders with new mail stored
in it. One folder was deleted (7 MB of mail) and replaced with a new folder
containing only four new messages."
Until the problem is addressed, employees are advised to hold off on
installing Netscape 7. Watch Computing and Communications News for updates.
