Laboratory Telephone System Upgrade Phasing In New Telephones

Telephone Services is upgrading the Laboratory's current telephone system. The current telephone system was installed in 1988 and is nearing the end of its life cycle. The software and hardware is being discontinued by the manufacturer and will no longer be supported.

Other than finding new telephones on their desks, users will notice few changes. All features on the new telephone will work the same as on the old one. Also, voice mail is unaffected by the upgrade.

To minimize disruption to Laboratory staff, the upgrade is a phased implementation. Users will migrate to the new system one building at a time. The migration began with off-site locations, and the Berkeley Tower (Bldg. 937), Center Street (Bldg. 941) and the Oakland Scientific Facility (Bldg. 943) have been completed.

Two days prior to their phone upgrade, affected users will be sent email notification from Telephone Services. Employees can expect no more than 15 minutes of downtime while programming changes are completed and the telephone set is replaced. Telephone Services expects the upgrade to be completed by the end of the year.

For more information about the upgrade or any other services provided by Telephone Services, write to tsc@lbl.gov or call X7997.
