| New TEID Service Melds PowerPoint with Video for Online Presentations |
|
A new technology that enables the real-time recording of lectures and presentations
featuring digital content PowerPoint slides and high-quality speaker audio
and video is now available through TEID's Video Services Group. An example
of the new service can be viewed at TEID's
Video Services Group. Click on Online Presentations to view recently
recorded events. This system utilizes RealMedia, the Lab standard streaming
player.
The system has been designed to facilitate high-quality viewing of lectures and meeting presentations, including a separate video of the speaker/presenter synchronized with the slides shown as part of the lecture. The slides are displayed digitally at high resolution for readability and clarity. Each slide's textual data are gathered automatically to form an outline of the slides. Viewers can use this outline to jump to content anywhere within the presentation, and both the video and accompanying slide will be in synch. For example, if you want to jump to the second half of a talk, you can do so quickly without having to sift through the first portion. In addition, there is a searchable database of metadata or keywords from each presentation, which can be searched and used as a further jump point to content within the lecture/talk. Plans are in place to archive presentations by division or project as well, to make searching easier, should you not know keywords contained within the talk. TEID's Video Services Group Lead, Ellen Seidler (X 4237) can provide estimates for recording and Web hosting your event or talk. Once lectures are on the Web, usually within an hour of the conclusion of the talk, they can remain there for access via the Web, with 24/7 accessibility to anyone with a Web browser configured for RealMedia playback. In addition, TEID can create assessment questions to facilitate the receipt of credit for training classes, if that is needed; or provide a list of those who have viewed the presentations online. "We anticipate this new service will provide a convenient way for Lab users and the public, as desired, to view educational, institutional and information content, conveniently and efficiently, enabling a more effective and far-reaching distribution of Lab resources," said TEID Department Head Jane Tierney. |
