New Web Pages Make Choosing, Configuring Micron and Dell Computers Easier

The Computing Infrastructure Support (CIS) Department and the Computing Sciences Procurement team have recently been working with Micron and Dell to make it easier to buy a variety of equipment using LBNL Basic Ordering Agreements (BOAs).

Both vendors now maintain an on-line store for LBNL and have added the capability of specifying optional components using drop-down menus. The changes reflect feedback from Lab employees who wanted to be able to add more memory or disk, and an optional CD burner, for example.

Micron's offerings include both Pentium- and Athlon-based systems. Again, some scientific users requested that the faster Athlon-based systems be included under the BOA. Dell is the Lab's current BOA source for laptops.

In the future the Dell site will include desktop and server hardware configurations. In addition, Dell offers a dual-processor Xenon system that can delivered with Linux for high-end workstation needs.

You can get to both sites by clicking on the "Buy a computer" link in the left-hand menu on the CIS home page. You can also get there by using the Lab's A-Z index, finding the Procurement Department's "General Store" page under P, selecting the B2B System contracts menu on the left-hand side, and then clicking on either the Micron Desktops or Dell Laptops selections.
