Rates for the new Veritas backup service offered to UNIX users by the Computing
Infrastructure Support (CIS) Department will be dramatically reduced effective
March 1. The rate will be cut from $25 per gigabyte of file space to $20
for the first gigabyte and $13 per subsequent gigabyte. At the same time,
billing will be changed to reflect the actual volume of data copied in monthly
full copies and daily incremental copies that contain only changes in files
since the previous copy was made.
"Our goal is to the make the service more attractive and increase
its use," said Rosemary Evanoff, head of CIS. "The Veritas system
offers users more flexibility and now it's less expensive. We plan to
review the rates again to see if they can be lowered further in a few
months."
Some UNIX systems using older versions of operating systems cannot be
transferred to the Veritas service and will remain on the Legato system.
The price for Legato services and for Macintosh and PC backups cannot
be reduced at this time. CIS is testing the use of Veritas for Mac and
PC backups and hopes to offer this service for those users in the next
few months. For more information about Veritas, see previous articles
