Netscape 6.2 Has Lots of Little Bugs, Best to Avoid Installing It Now

The new version of Netscape Communicator (v 6.2) is out there, but the Lab's Computing Infrastructure Technologies Group is advising LBNL employees not to install it. There's no major problem with the application, but a lot of little inconsistencies can make it harder to use and to support. There is also some lost functionality with the new version. Here are some of the technical problems identified so far:

Email:

  • Can't customize the installation (LDAP directory searching)
  • No centralized administration (i.e. pushing out new certificates)
  • Some attachments will not open
  • When sorting mail by column and the message window is closed, the selected message does not stay in focus
  • "Next" button does not function properly
  • Can't rearrange columns
  • Message filters work intermittently
  • Drag-and-drop does not work for lists of email addresses

Web:

  • Many Web pages do not support Netscape 6.x
  • DHTML renders incorrectly
  • Many Java scripts fail
  • Can't display page source on dynamically generated pages
  • Occasionally characters typed into form fields disappear
