New Integrated Database Being Implemented to Support "Work for Others" Projects

The new Research Administration and Project Information Databse (RAPID) is being developed to support the Laboratory's "Work for Others" (non-DOE) funded research projects. RAPID is the implementation of the PeopleSoft Grants module and will be a part of the Laboratory's integrated Financial Management System (FMS). The August 6 "go-live" date will herald a system that replaces a number of paper-based processes and the SPPT (Sponsored Projects Proposals Tracking) system. SPPT has been in place since 1987 and is only available to the Financial Services Department. Principal Investigators, proposal developers and budget analysts will now input information into the new system. Training will be offered in July.

Key features of RAPID will include:

  • Electronic e-mail notification of status of proposals and awards
  • Automation of award and project closing
  • Automation of project set-up
  • Integration with other Berkeley Lab PeopleSoft Financial Management Systems.

This is the first phase of a multi-phase implementation. The first phase is geared to replacing the paper and manual processes. This will allow funding information to be in the same system as costing and project information. The second major phase will be electronic proposal application development in preparation for electronic submission of proposals to meet sponsors' requirements and federal mandates. The second phase will also move RAPID to a Web-based application.

Classes have been scheduled for July for proposal developers, budget analysts, and other users of the system. Brown bag lunches will be held in July to demonstrate RAPID's features. If you are interested in more information, contact Phyllis Gale at PMGale@lbl.gov. A Web site is currently under development.
