Lab's Linux Users Group to Hear About OpenOffice at Tuesday, October 2, Meeting

Have you ever wondered if there is an open source product that can provide standard desktop software capabilities in a multiplatform environment? And, if there is such an effort, how interoperable would it be with commercial products from companies like Microsoft?

These questions and others will be the subject of a presentation by Max Lanfranconi from OpenOffice.org at the next Linux User Group meeting. Max will start his presentation shortly after noon on Tuesday, October 2, in the Bldg. 50 auditorium.

OpenOffice is the open source version of Star Office, and was released by Sun Microsystems last year. Since then it has gone through many code changes and while the code is still considered pre-Alpha, some users have found it to be very stable (depending on which build you get). Currently there are binary builds released for Linux, Solaris, and Windows (Mac OSX is coming very soon).

For more information about these topics and more, visit the main LUG site. Please don't forget to RSVP if you are planning to attend. This helps the LUG leadership plan for more effective meetings when they know the level of interest in a particular topic.
