Lab Negotiates Special Discount Pricing for Hummingbird Software Products

Software maker Hummingbird is offering the Lab an opportunity to purchase their Exceed, Maestro and HostExplorer products at a significant savings -- between 40-65 percent off of their commercial pricing. The special prices are in response to increasing requests from Lab employees for the software.

There are three product lines from Hummingbird that are currently in use at the Lab -- Exceed, Maestro and HostExplorer. Exceed permits desktop, Web, and remote users to easily access UNIX applications from Windows 2000/NT, Windows 95/98/ME, and Windows 3.x-based personal computers. Maestro allows users to choose a network file system (NFS) solution for quick and seamless access to file and print resources in a mixed PC and UNIX network. HostExplorer incorporates Hummingbird's Windows-based host access, Web-to-Host, Hummingbird Host Publishing, and Host Printing applications to provide access from enterprise desktops to mission-critical applications and information on enterprise hosts.

Although these are the products covered by the special pricing arrangement, other Hummingbird products are available that can be included in this contract. They can be priced for you on a case-by-case basis, so please forward your requests to licenses@lbl.gov. For more detailed product information, visit Hummingbird's website at www.hummingbird.com.

For more information about Hummingbird discount pricing, call Site License Coordinator Liz Cahalen at X2530.

The agreement also allows employees who buy new licenses to purchase optional maintenance coverage for a one-year term and covers technical support (via phone or Web) and automatic upgrades. At least one upgrade is released per year, sometimes more. Employees who just want to buy a license upgrade must also buy the maintenance package.

If you have purchased Hummingbird products in the past, you may be eligible to upgrade to the latest version if you have version 6.2 or higher. To upgrade, you must purchase maintenance along with an upgrade license. Any release prior to version 6.2 is not eligible for upgrade. To get the latest version, you must purchase a new license, but maintenance is optional.

The following list of products reflects the pricing available to Berkeley Lab employees under the new Hummingbird discount program. The savings over individual pricing is substantial.
