IT Support Options

While a wide variety of computing equipment is available through strategic sourcing agreements, the IT Division can only afford to support a subset of equipment available through our recommended sources.

Desktop and Laptop Computers: Support generally includes the following:

  • Installation of new computers
  • Installation of the LBNL standard software environment (email, calendar, etc)
  • Computer security support (virus, spyware, adware protection)
  • Patch Management
  • Integration with the Standard Backup System
  • Integration with the Standard File and Print Service (Novell for Windows, CUPS for Unix/Linux)
  • Optional integration with lab standard Windows or Unix/Linux domains (central accounts needed to access shared resources and/or take advantage of extended cyber protection)
  • Repair and Upgrade of existing hardware and software (a limited selection of parts will be stocked)
  • Liaison with vendors concerning warranty issues, if required
  • Support from the IT Division Help Desk

Printers: IT Division support is limited to HP printers, using contracts with a third party vendor (SSP at the present time)

Monitors: We have a contract with Moniserv, a vendor that can do monitor repairs for many vendors. To see if your monitor is included and what it would cost, go here.

Disk Drive Recovery: For data recovery on disks that have "crashed", we have had good success with On-Track (KrollOntrack, Inc.). Information that will be needed by procurement when they initiate contact with the vendor can be found here. Be prepared with answers to these questions when you do the procurement requisition.  At some point later in the process, an electronic version of this document  will be emailed to you by on-track with vendor specific information filled out.  You will complete it and include it with the disk drive when it is shipped to the vendor. Note: just because a system will not boot, does not mean the disk has been damaged. Consult your technical support person prior to using a data recovery service.
