The Selection Process
The IT Division provides recommendations for equipment when ever there is a significant choice to be made that could impact the product life cycle at LBNL (procurement and support). Typically this involves Windows systems, due to the large number of vendors that provide competing systems. We also identify monitor and printer recommendations for reasons involving consistent setup and repair support.
The returning user’s page has sources for each major category of product. General guidance follows.
- Review recommended equipment (fully supported by the IT Division)
- Read more about LBNL’s standard software at https://www.lbl.gov/twiki/bin/view/Main/StandardSoftware for Windows systems.
- Windows Laptops: Dell Latitude product line
- Windows Desktops: tower and small profile units from DELL.
- Printers: Hewlett Packard.
- Monitors: Samsung (for Linux/Windows) and Apple.
- If one of the recommended systems is acceptable:
- If eBuy
- Go here for help: http://procurement.lbl.gov/LBNL/eBuy
- Go here to buy: ebuy.lbl.gov
- Review “LBNL Recommended Hardware” link
- Use Search function if not specifically listed.
- If not eBuy, then
- Record the part number and price associated with the system
- Identify the account to be charged
- Send the part number and price to a designated requisition preparer in your division
- If the recommended equipment is not acceptable:
- Review equipment available through eBuy (using US Falcon/CDWG)
- Use the search functions associated with the CDWG web site to find the equipment you are interested in (e.g. Lenovo is one of many vendors that can be sourced from CDWG)
- Add equipment to cart and submit order
- Approval request and procurement actions are completed automatically as part of eBuy.
- Review Windows Systems (UC standard Systems)
- Follow the appropriate link on Ebuy (Anacapa/Dell)
- Either choose one of the Standard Configurations or follow the customize link to create a quote for your own customized system. Alternatively, the entire Dell product line is available under the Systems Menu link.
- Make sure you add the part number for Windows XP Pro or Windows Vista Business Edition (we do not get academic pricing for upgrades and only XP Pro or Vista Business can be used at Berkeley Lab).
- Add your system to the Cart and "Continue Shopping" if you need to add more items to your order
- When everything you want to purchase is in your cart, click "Create Order Requisition"
- As for other eBuy purchases, you will be asked for an approver and project id. The order will be placed electronically.
- For Linux
- Sources (no specific standard sources)
- Request a price quote
- Identify the account to be charged
- Send quote number to a designated requisition preparer in your division
- If no equipment from a recommended source is acceptable, consult your local technical support for advice. You will then need to work with a procurement representative to create a purchase requisition
