Maximo - Enterprise Operations and Asset Management System
Description:
The Facilities Division of E.O. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory manages and operates an infrastructure consisting of 180 acres of University of California property and over 13 million gross-square feet of floor space. MRO Software’s Maximo system provides the Division with a centralized, real-time operations and information platform.
Maximo was acquired in 1996 to replace an aging central inventory system with an eye to the future. Recognizing the Division’s existing application systems were both expensive to maintain and aging rapidly, Maximo was selected because it offered a comprehensive suite of integrated business functions designed to take advantage of relational database technology. Maximo is currently implemented as a three-tier client-server application. Current functions include:
- Work Management is a suite of functions that include Work Order Tracking and Work Manager (work scheduling) -- Employing work management, Division staff creates work requests, define work scope, assign staff and other resources, and track and manage work progress.
- Inventory Management is a suite of functions used primarily to operate the Laboratory’s Central [Parts and Materials] Stores. Perpetual stores inventory is maintained in real-time. Stores buyers can invoke automated processes to identify inventory candidates for replenishment. Full procurement and receiving functions are initiated within Maximo and fully integrated with the Laboratory’s PeopleSoft Procurement System. Laboratory customers can “charge” for materials they need and confidently expect to see those charges reflected in their financial ledgers at the end of each accounting period.
- Equipment Management is a suite of functions that support operations and maintenance of the Laboratory’s 18,000 pieces of capital equipment. The location of each [equipment] asset is maintained in a central data repository. Preventive maintenance schedules are automated and preventive maintenance work orders are created based on those schedules. Replacement parts can be designated for each and every maintenance procedure. Designated parts [in inventory] are pulled and staged by the Central Stores unit and are available for pick-up by the assigned mechanic. All costs incurred in maintaining equipment are captured by the system.
- The Laboratory’s GSA vehicle fleet of approximately 300 vehicles is managed using Equipment Management.
- Resource Management is a suite of applications used to manage labor, material, and equipment [tools] resources. Calendars can be used in support of planning and scheduling all resources.
Status:
Operational. Inventory Management, Resource Management and accounting integrated were implemented in October 1996. In 1998, Work Management was implemented. In 2000, Equipment Management was implemented. Additional Maximo functional components have been introduced between 2000 and the present.
System Requirements:
The client-server version of Maximo requires a minimum of an Intel-based Pentium running Windows 2000/XP with 512 MB of memory.
