CIS Announces Star Office Evaluation Effort

CIS is sponsoring an evaluation of Star Office, an office productivity suite that runs on multiple operating systems, including the Solaris[tm] Operating Environment, Microsoft Windows, and Linux. Star Office is provided by Sun Microsystems and is based on the code base of the open source product, Open Office.

LBNL has a site license for Star Office. It can be downloaded from the CIS download page. Go to the CIS download page at http://www.lbl.gov/download and look for the Software Evaluation section at the bottom.

An informal steering committee has been created. It includes John Staples (AFRD), Joyce Cordell (ASD/EETD), Mark Rosenberg (CIS/CITG), Gayle Peuser(CIS/MPSG), Greg Kurtzer(CIS/MPSG), and Charlie Verboom (CIS)

Evaluation Goals

1. Determine how useful Star Office can be for the Unix/Linux Community at LBNL
2. Determine how interoperable Star Office users can be with Windows and MAC MS Office users (for the purposes of exchanging scientific and administrative documents, spreadsheets and presentations)

This page will also be used as a reference site for Internet resources that might help in our understanding of the products capability.
