Possible CUPS Configuration Errors

This contains possible CUPS mis-configurations or print errors and the error messages they produce, if any.

  1. The IP address or DNS name is invalid:
  2. The printer is "stopped" from the server.
  3. The job is submitted with an invalid printer name.
  4. Absolutely wrong print driver.
  5. Using HP LaserJet 2200 Series PS driver to misconfigure printer:
  6. Printer problems.
  7. Printer has no power:
  8. No connection from external "print server" to the printer
  9. "Print server" is disconnected from the network:
  10. The spool directory is full:
  11. Print jobs immediately abort, and cups website says "Pages not found!"
The IP address or DNS name is invalid:

There is no error when submitting the job:
lp -d itsd-50b-3209d-hplj3330 2cupspages.ps
request id is itsd-50b-3209d-hplj3330-478 (1 file(s))

Looking at the printer on the https://cups..lbl.gov/ website the job says it is pending, and there is a note listed amongst the printer information stating

"Unable to locate printer 'junk.lbl.gov' - No such file or directory"
It looks like this:

The printer is "stopped" from the server.

There is no error when submitting the job:
lp -d itsd-50b-3209d-hplj3330 2cupspages.ps
request id is itsd-50b-3209d-hplj3330-479 (1 file(s))

The picture of the printer on the website, which is usually green, becomes red. The job is shown as pending, and the state of the printer is listed as "Paused".

The job is submitted with an invalid printer name.

When the job is submitted the following error appears:
lp -d itsd-50b-3209d-hplj33 2cupspages.ps
lp: unable to print file: client-error-not-found

Absolutely wrong print driver.

Use Apple Laser Writer instead of HP Laser Jet and printing test page prints per fectly.
However using the EPSON Sylus Photo 1270 driver does not work with a Laser jet p rinter. (Garbage printed on many pieces of paper.)

Using HP LaserJet 2200 Series PS driver to misconfigure printer:

Printer problems.

No paper and no toner have the same response:
No errors are displayed when sending the print job:
lp -d itsd-50b-3209d-hplj3330 gettysburg-address.txt
request id is itsd-50b-3209d-hplj3330-489 (1 file(s))

On the website, the job shows as being completed and the printer says ready to p rint. So there is no indication that there has been an error.

Printer has no power:

No errors when submitting print job:
lp -d itsd-50b-3209d-hplj3330 gettysburg-address.txt
request id is itsd-50b-3209d-hplj3330-491 (1 file(s))

On the website the printer says

"Network host '128.3.11.222' is busy; will retry in 10 seconds..."
The job shows as pending.

No connection from external "print server" to the printer

No error when submitting job:
lp -d itsd-50b-3209d-hplj3330 gettysburg-address.txt
request id is itsd-50b-3209d-hplj3330-492 (1 file(s))

The website reads

"Network host '128.3.11.222' is busy; will retry in 25 seconds ..."
The job is listed as "processing".

"Print server" is disconnected from the network:

No error when submitting job:

The website reads

"Attempting to connect to host 128.3.11.222 on port 9100"
The job is listed as "processing"

/var/log/cups/page_log showed
itsd-50b-3215-hplj4si mgelbaum 2752 [17/Mar/2003:14:34:28 -0800] 1 1
However, the printer itself was disconnected from the network
and its inner workings were removed.
Further, "Manage Printers" showed no completed jobs
and in fact all the jobs submitted were still in the queue.
Status from Manage Printers and Manage Classes showed

             Description: itsd-50b-3215-hplj4si
             Location: 50B-3215
             Printer State: idle, accepting jobs.

Worse problem: BACK TO TOP

The spool directory is full:

Get the following error when submitting job:
lp -d csgroup xyplot.ps
lp: unable to print file: server-error-service-unavailable

From https://cups-stage.lbl.gov/printers/csgroup-dup clicked on Cancel Job got the message:
Error:
client-error-forbidden

Print jobs immediately abort, and cups website says "Pages not found!"

To fix this problem, delete the printer, and then add it again from scratch. The class will also need to be recreated.
