IT Hosts Faculty/Student Team from Washington State

This is the fourth year the IT Division has hosted members of the FaST program, which this year started June 12 and ends August 18. In previous summers, the teams came from local community colleges, and focused on Linux and high performance computing topics. This is the first year that a team is focusing on Windows as their primary research target.

"I believe that academic and research institutions have positive impacts in the society, said Tanko, an instructor in the Computing Science Department at Big Bend. “As an academic, I’m always looking for ways to improve and develop myself professionally and participating in this year’s FaST program at LBNL will help meet that goal."

Tanko’s team is focusing on encrypting data, performance benchmarking, and a full-scale cyber security review of Microsoft Vista (the planned successor to the XP operating system).  Specifically, the team is looking at how Vista runs on standard PCs and interacts with Active Directory, firewalls and security templates.

“Windows Vista is the next operating system to be released and the knowledge I gain from evaluating it will greatly enhance my understanding of using the new operating system,” said student James Arriaga. “"I am a non-traditional student who retired and then enrolled in the local college to be retrained.  I believe that the real world experience of being a LBNL intern will give me an edge on what to expect when I graduate and begin looking for employment.”

The team is being assisted by  Craig Nelson of the IT Infrastructure Department, Jay Krous of the Computer Protection Program, Dan Pulsifer in the Engineering Division, and Charlie Verboom in IT User Support.  The group has weekly review meetings to discuss their research activities, the resultw of which will be formal papers and research posters for display in August.

"When I first heard about the FaST team, I thought it would be a great opportunity to apply what I had learned in school and see what it would be like to work with an IT department. I believe my time here at Berkeley lab will provided me with a valuable experience that will help me throughout the remainder of my schooling" said student Brice Lucero.
