IT Hosts Student Interns from Local Colleges Each year the IT Division brings in a number of students from local community colleges as part of a school-to-career program that is now in its seventh year. “Internships assist students with furthering their education goals, and give them hands-on experience in computer support and maintenance,” said Charlie Verboom, IT’s Workstation Support Group Lead and sponsoring mentor of the interns. Read students’ stories here. Oliver Dario from Contra Costa College is assisting on the IT Help Desk. As a Faculty and Student Team (FaST) intern at LBNL last year, Oliver conducted research in UNIX computer security. A Bay Area native, Oliver also tutors high school students in math and science. He will attend UC Davis this coming fall to get his degree in computer science and engineering. His interests include programming, physics and circuits. Cobber Lam from Ohlone College is interning in IT’s Mac/PC Support Group. Cobber also works as a computer lab assistant and teacher assistant. Originally from Hong Kong, Cobber spent a number of years in Paris working as a tour manager before returning to school. Cobber will transfer to Cal State University, East Bay, this fall to major in network and data communication.
Tong Lin from Ohlone College is working on an IT Division wiki, a corporate website that allows users to share and input information. Tong has a master’s in engineering in communication and electronic systems, and comes with extensive experience from Fujian, China. She was an associate professor of computer science at the Civil Aviation University of China in Tianjin for more than 10 years. As an intern, Tong hopes to advance her computer science terminology in English while gaining work experience in the U.S. |
