IT Tips for Buying a Laptop Using the Lab’s New Vendor

Interested in buying a new laptop? The IT Division recommends that Lab staff purchase laptops in the Dell Latitude series (410, 610, and 810). For details on purchasing a new laptop, check out the Berkeley Lab Computer Store and click on the laptop/desktop icon.

The Lab’s vendor, KST, has created a number of standard configurations to fit the needs of most users called “sweet spots.” If a “sweet spot” doesn’t fit your specific needs, use the KST/Dell Premier Channel to do a custom configuration and eQuote. And don’t forget to reference the eQuote in your requisition to the Lab’s Procurement system to facilitate the process.

To get the Berkeley Lab Computer Store website up and running, Procurement and the IT Division worked with KST, a UCLA vendor, to utilize KST’s strong connection with Dell as a source for commodity computers for LBNL. The challenge was to expand the KST contract beyond its primary users, UC campuses, which are entitled to academic discounts for Microsoft software, to including federal pricing for LBNL employees. Through the website, KST can also provide products from a number of other vendors including Samsung monitors, HP printers and IBM laptops. Reminder: Federal license requirements need to be factored in whenever software is purchased as well.
