You’ve Got Mail

You’ve got mail. Lots of it, and that’s a problem. Did you know that 100MB is the total limit you are allowed for email before you are charged? Beyond 100MB you will be charged $1.75 per MB per month over the limit—up to $300 per month! About 18% of Lab users have over 100MB stored on the server. To check how much storage you are using, go here.

Or click on the small grid-like icon located at the top of the left column in Mozilla. Check “Size” and the amount of storage for each folder will appear in the column. The total of those folders on the server at the top is your total usage.

Steps to decrease your email storage:

  1. Empty your trash daily! More than 12% of the Lab’s total email storage is trash. Please don’t use email on the server as your primary data storage of choice!
  2. Move your folders off the server and into folders on the local or network drive. This will make these folders, however, unavailable offsite. There are certain cases when it may be necessary to store data on the server:
    1. Those who travel regularly for conferences and meetings.
    2. Those who work regularly from home or telecommute.
    3. Those who work at alternative work sites regularly.
(Note: Some people may have local folders on a file server that can be accessed remotely. They should follow the same instructions below.)

If you chose to move your messages to your local hard drive and those messages are critical, you should make sure they’re backed up. For more on backups, go to: http://backups.lbl.gov/

To move folders from the server to your local drive follow these instructions.
