Tip of the Month: Dial by Name Lets You Call Lab Employees When You Can't Look Up or Remember an Extension

If you need to reach a Laboratory employee but don't know his or her extension and you can't get to a computer to look the person up in the directory, try using Dial by Name, the voice mail system directory which can be used to directly dial any employee who has a voice mailbox. Dial by Name can be accessed in three ways:

  1. During off-hours by calling the Laboratory's main number (510-486-4000) pressing 1 when prompted, and entering at least 4 characters of the employee's last name. When enough characters are entered to identify the employee's name, the system states the name. If more than one name matches the characters you've entered, the system presents those names one at a time and asks you to select the one you want.
  2. During business hours while holding for a Laboratory Operator (486-4000) and pressing 1 when prompted for Dial by Name.
  3. From your own voice mailbox by pressing 6 to record and send a message and then pressing 00 to address by name.

It's important to know that your name can only be found in the Dial by Name Directory if you have programmed it into your voice mailbox. To record your name in your voice mailbox, at the "Ready" prompt, press 16 followed by 8.

For more information about Dial by Name, or any other voice mail system features, call the Telephone Service Center at ext. 7997 or send email to tsc@lbl.gov.
