What Is LDAP and Why Is an LDAP Password Useful?

As the Lab streamlines its business services computer applications, the preferred method for authenticating employee access is by LDAP password. While most employees already have such a password, they may not know it by name. If you use the Lab's IMAP4 email system, your Netscape password is your LDAP password. LDAP stands for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol and is the method by which employee names are located and authenticated in the central electronic address books.

However, even employees who don't use IMAP4 email may need an LDAP password. For example, accessing the newest version (v2) of the Lab's IRIS Data Warehouse will require an LDAP password. This will also be the case for other new Web-enabled applications in the future. Likewise, employees who want don't use IMAP4 but want to use the Lab's central email server for sending mail from offsite will also need an LDAP password to gain access.

The Lab's computer support Help Desk (X4357) can help employees establish an LDAP password. The process needs to be done by phone and can't be completed by submitting a Web-based help request.
