Suggestions Wanted: Which Features Should Be Included on a Standard PC for Scientific Computing?

Through a Basic Ordering Agreement, or BOA with Micron Electronics, Lab programs can purchase several levels of standardized PCs at discounted prices. The standard hardware and software configurations result in both lower costs and improved computer support.

With continuing changes in users' needs and technology, the Computer Infrastructure Support Department would like to hear from scientists about whether the current high-end configuration meets their needs for scientific computing and what kind of upgrades make sense. For example, options now being considered include increasing the processor speed to either 933 MHz (raising the cost by $150) or 1 GHz (at an added cost of $300), or offering a dual-processor model. Should the system include a DVD player as opposed to standard CD-ROM play? More memory? Bigger disks?

Employees interested in submitting their suggestions can use the Computer Support suggestion box.

Why buy a Lab standard PC?

In addition to the pricing and support advantages mentioned above, here are several more reasons for purchasing a Lab-standard PC:

  • The Mac/PC Support Group (MPSG) will handle all hardware replacement under warranty. This includes shipping the faulty parts and getting replacements. MPSG is only able to provide this service for Lab-standard Micron PCs.
  • MPSG will ensure that all "corporate" ISS and CIS applications run on the standard PC. Trying to troubleshoot problems with these applications on non-standard systems is usually costly and can only be done on a best-effort basis.
  • MPSG is looking into providing computer lockdowns to protect desktop systems, but will only be able to provide this service for the standard Micron units.
