CIS to Increase Some, Decrease Other Recharge Rates for FY 2001

The Computing Infrastructure Support Department, which provides a wide range of desktop and email support services to the Lab, has published a new schedule of recharge rates.

Changes from FY00 include12 percent reductions in IMAP mail storage and UNIX Central Processor disk space, dropping from $2to $1.75 per megabyte/month. The cost of disk space associated with Web services also dropped 30 percent, from $2.50 to $1.75.

The monthly fee for central UNIX accounts has been increased from $3 to $5 to cover the costs of account and project ID administration.

For the first time in two years, however, Time and Material rates for support of desktop computers have been increased. The new rates include an increase from $90 to $95 per hour for Mac and PC support and from $90 to $100 per hour for UNIX support. In addition, the cost of UNIX systems managed under Service Level Agreements (SLAs) have risen approximately 7 percent - the first increase in two years.

These figures still compare favorably with by industry standards. For example, one company the Mac/PC Support Group uses as a benchmark charges $135 per hour, with a two-hour minimum for on site support.

The main reason for the rate increases is to cover increasing salaries for support engineers in an increasingly competitive job market, especially in the need for skilled UNIX support techs. Additionally, the rising cost of supplies, materials, staff training and equipment have helped push up the rates.
