Update on Micron System
Conflicts Between Windows 98 and New Hard Drive Technology As you may recall, in late September Micron alerted the Lab to a problem with Windows 98 and the new ATA 100 hard drives. The situation involved a possible error condition during shutdown. The problem occurred when the computer shut down while in the process of committing the contents of the Virtual Disk Cache to disk. The problem came to light a week before the end of fiscal year 2000, traditionally a time when many Lab programs order new computers. Unfortunately, both Micron models available through the Lab’s BOA utilized the ATA 100 technology. As a result, even though the new machines were received by the Lab, the Mac/PC Support Group (MPSG) held onto them until a fix was announced and documented by Micron, and then tested by MPSG during the week of October 4. Those computers have now been delivered to the programs that ordered them. The problem affected 191 systems ordered between August 28 and October 2. |
