Connected Backup Service May Induce Windows 98 Error Message at Shutdown

If you're a PC user who subscribes to the Connected backup service (which automatically backs up your files over the Internet), you may see an error message if your system is set up with the option to have Connected perform a backup prior to the conclusion of the shutdown sequence in Windows 98.

If you tell Connected to back up the system before shutting down, Connected runs, successfully backs up the system, closes and then an error message pops up. Even though the system has been backed up, an on-screen dialog box appears, stating, "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" followed by "NALDESK caused an invalid page fault in ..."

This error only occurs when the "backup before shutdown" option is selected. The problem was first observed with the update of Connected software to version 4.1.212 (around mid-March). The Lab's Mac/PC Support Group is working with Novell and Connected Corporation to see if the problem can be resolved. In the meantime, be assured that the system is being backed up and that your data is safe. If you have any questions, call the Computer Support Help Desk at X4357.
