Lab's Computer Protection Program Offers the Latest Info on Fending Off Cyber Threats

Computer hackers. Internet service attackers. Local server hijackers. With all the news lately about computer break-ins, viruses, denials of service and various other on-line headaches, getting the latest technically accurate information on the problems and solutions can seem virtually impossible. If you're responsible for maintaining any computer systems at the Lab, the Computer Protection Program maintains various email lists for quickly disseminating the latest bulletins. Any interested employee can sign up for any of the following distribution lists:

Email List: cp-alert
Purpose: Distributes CIAC (DOE's Computer Incident Advisory Capability), CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) and other urgent bulletins that detail computer system vulnerabilities that may require urgent attention. This list typically sends out around five notices a month. Most deal with newly discovered system vulnerabilities, assess the risk and describe solutions.

Email List: cp-discuss
Purpose:
Distributes general computer protection information of a non-urgent nature. The posts may include short articles, notices of upcoming conferences and seminars, or websites and other resources of interest. If you have a little more interest in computer protection issues than most people., this is a good list to get on. Computer Protection Program Jim Rothfuss gets a lot of nuggets of information that he thinks is interesting ((Remember, he's the Lab's head computer protection geek). If you're like Jim and count those nuggets as gold rather than spam, this list is for you.

Email List: cp-scan-notify
Purpose:
The Computer Protection Program incorporates frequent scans of Laboratory networks to find known computer vulnerabilities. Before each scan, a notice is posted to cp-scan-notify. This list was designed mainly for computer techies who watch their logs for scans.

Sign up for cp-alert, cp-discuss or cp-scan-notify.

Email List: nt-ug
Purpose:
The LBNL Windows NT Users' Group mailing list isn't limited to computer protection discussions, but many of the posts seem to lean in that direction. Anybody who is anybody in the world of LBNL Windows NT system management is on this list, so if you're operating a Windows NT box at LBNL and want to be "In The Know" you need to be on this list. You might also want to join in the users' group meetings (which, by the way, are announced on this list). Join the LBNL Windows NT Users' Group.

Email List: linuxug
Purpose:
The LBNL Linux Users' Group mailing list. The volume on this list is small but growing. It's a good place to get information if you're having trouble putting on that latest security patch. By the way, if you are running Linux, be aware that Linux is currently a favorite target for attackers. Learn more about the LBNL Linux Users' Group and sign up.
