New Scientific Facility in Oakland Nearing Completion

Construction of the Lab's new scientific facility in downtown Oakland is proceeding apace. Once completed, the new facility at 20th and Franklin will will provide office space and house a range of computing equipment, both new and moved from the Laboratory. Among the systems to be moved are servers providing administrative and business services for the Lab and high-performance computers and data storage machines serving users of the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). NERSC's newest supercomputer, a 2,432-processor IBM SP, is scheduled to be installed in the new building later this year. A limited number of Lab employees will share workspaces in Oakland in addition to having permanent offices at the Lab.
