Tip of the Month: How Email Storage Charges are Determined

With the recent institution of monthly charges ($1.75 per megabyte per billing month) for centrally stored email of more than 100 megabytes (100 MB), several employees have asked how the charges are determined. Here's how:

The billing is based on the average amount over the monthly billing period (which doesn't necessarily coincide with each calendar month). For example, if you have 200 MB for 20 days and 50 MB for 10, you will be billed on the basis of 150 MB (or 50 MB over the basic limit) -- (4,000 + 500)/30 = 150 MB average for the month. Here's another example: 120 MB for 10 days and 80 MB for 20 days results in no charge -- (1200+1600)/30 = 93.3 MB.

This means that cleaning up your central email folders at any time will reduce your average over the billing month. Keeping your storage files compact and current can help you avoid charges altogether.
