Lab's Electronic Calendaring Application Gets New Name, New Look, New Features

The Computing Infrastructure Support (CIS) Department is rolling out a new version of the Lab's electronic calendaring system in January. The server and new web interface (shown at www.lbl.gov/cal) were upgraded to support the new client features in December. To bring employees up to speed on the new version, CIS is offering a series of brown-bag talks to showcase new features. The Thursday sessions will begin with a presentation for ASD staff at noon on Jan. 18 in the Bldg. 50 Auditorium. Additional sessions open to all interested Lab employees will be presented on Jan. 25, Feb. 1, and Feb. 8 starting at noon in the Bldg. 50 Auditorium.

The new version of the application will be basically the same, but with some new features. The current version, called Netscape Calendar, is no longer supported by Netscape. So, CIS went to the company that originally developed the application and bought the new and improved version, which is being fully supported. Several UC campuses are also using the new version, which is now called Steltor CorporateTime.

Among the new features are:
  • The ability to send email from the calendar application to people outside the Lab to inform them about meeting details.
  • Support for synchronization with the latest PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) such as Palm (Windows and Macintosh-based systems), Psion and PDAs running Windows CE.
  • A reorganized interface for setting up new meetings - the same options are there, but the look is slightly different (with a dash of color).

Employees can continue to use the current version of Netscape Calendar or download the new version from the Lab's software download page beginning Jan. 18. New Web pages explaining the new version of the application will be posted soon on the calendar Web site. All interested employees are also invited to learn more by attending one of the brown bag sessions scheduled next year.
