New Policy to Increase Password Security for Users of LBNL Domain

Employees who have accounts on the LBNL domain will need to follow new rules when choosing passwords for logging into the domain. The LBNL domain is a Windows NT domain and is used by several hundred users across the Lab to access and exchange files. Under the new policy, passwords will need to be at least eight characters long (up from the current five) and will have to be changed every 180 days (instead of the current 365 days). Also, when choosing new passwords, users will need to choose phrases which are different from their past five passwords.

The new policy goes into effect on Wednesday, April 26. However, users won't need to change their passwords until current ones expire, or when new accounts are created.

The new policy is aimed at increasing cyber-security. For more information about choosing secure passwords, click here.
