LBLnet to Offer Virtual Private Network Service for Secure Internet-Based Remote Access

Beginning May 1, the LBLnet Services Group will offer confidential communications with a Virtual Private Network (VPN) between LBLnet and remote locations across the Internet. An LBLnet VPN creates IP Security-compliant tunnel connections, allowing secure access to non-public information. The system automatically encrypts the data and sends it to the remote site, where it is then decrypted and forwarded to the intended destination.

"In our increasingly security-conscious world of Internet and Intranet communications, VPNs provide secure network connectivity on a public infrastructure, extending geographic connectivity to telecommuters, mobile users and remote offices," said Ted Sopher, head of the LBLnet Services Group in the Lab's Networking and Telecommunications Department.

The LBLnet VPN service is the best choice for people who use non-Berkeley Lab ISPs and connect via cable modems, Digital Subscriber Lines, dial-in modems or, connect from other remote sites, Sopher said. The system supports IP (Internet Protocol) only and allows users to access all LBNL resources as if they were on-site. However, users must request an account and install VPN client software on their systems. The client software is available for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT (4.0 SP3 and later), Windows 2000, Power Macintosh, Intel-based Linux and Sun Solaris computers. An unlimited-user license for all versions of the client software is included with each Lab VPN account. The client software is user-installable and user-transparent in operation, allowing simultaneous access to the LBNL network and to Internet resources.

Currently, the LBLnet Services Group is conducting a beta testing of the VPN system from Compatible Systems, Inc. (recently acquired by Cisco Systems). This service is scheduled to become the production version on May 1, 2000. During the remainder of FY2000, a one-time setup charge of $75 will be applied -- with no additional monthly fee. By May 1 more information about this service will be available and VPN requests will be accepted via hotlinks found on the LBLnet Services Group's web site. For technical support with network problems, contact LBLnet at X4559 or send an email to lblnet@lbl.gov.
