HR Unveils New and
Improved Web Site For Finding Jobs at the Lab This month the Lab's Human Resources Department launched its completely redesigned web site for finding employment at Berkeley Lab. The new page (cjo.lbl.gov) offers a number of new features and advantages over the previous version. For example, users can search the job opportunities database (which they couldn’t do before) and they can take any of four different avenues in their search:
The new site also allows new positions to be posted or changed immediately. This makes the site easier to maintain. In fact, HR estimates that the new site saves the Lab the equivalent of one full-time employee in maintenance effort. Additionally, the pages contain a link to an overview of Lab benefits, which can be another inducement to working at LBNL. Job applicants also have a variety of options for applying. They can cut and paste in their resume and cover letter to apply on line, send their resume by email, post it by regular mail or transmit it via fax. Human Resources launched the project after a meeting last summer with the Computing and Communications Services Advisory Committee (CSAC), which is made up of representatives from each division and many departments and provides input on computing and communication issues and policies which could affect the Lab. Among the concerns raised by CSAC members were the unequal visibility of jobs, the lack of a search capability and a sense that the site wasn't as well organized as it could be. HR also wanted to update the overall look and feel of the page. The project was a joint undertaking by Human Resources, the Information Systems and Services (ISS) Department and the Technical and Electronic Information Department (TEID). A final CSAC concern was also addressed in the redesign -- emphasizing the Lab's role as one of the nation's premier scientific institutions. On each of the pages is a link to the Lab's research programs so potential employees can quickly learn more about the Lab's scientific mission. |
