Block that Spam — But Don't Respond to It

Although the Lab has built an effective "Spamwall" to help keep unsolicited email from clogging up our cyber-arteries, occasional pieces do slip through. If you receive a piece of spam-mail and want to contribute to the Lab's low-spam diet, here are a few suggestions:
  • Type spam:block: <spammer's address> in the subject line and forward the offending item to spam@lbl.gov. Specifically, to stop such spam, we need the "Return-Path:" and "From:" info from the mail, so please include them with the forwarded message.

This will alert the Lab's spamblockers to take action — blocking the offending address, usually within a day.

  • Don't respond to the message, even to ask that you be deleted from the distribution list. A response confirms that your email address is valid and can lead to more unwanted missives.

  • Learn more by checking out the spam menu.
