Reminder: All Lab Computers Must Carry Security Advisory 'Banner'

As part of the enhanced security program at the Department Of Energy, every computer system owned by the Department must have a warning banner that is visible when users log onto the computer. Every computer will require changes to its system files to ensure that a banner is displayed at startup.

The full text of the required banner may be found in the "Privacy & Security Notice" section at: http://www.lbl.gov/ICSD/Security/policies/user-notice.htm

The banner states that all computers at Berkeley Lab are for authorized use only. Authorized use is defined at: http://www.lbl.gov/Workplace/Policy-Memos/usePolicy.html

Given the very high visibility of security at DOE, it is extremely important that all employees install the banners immediately.

Instructions for implementing the required warning banners on various types of systems may be found as indicated below. If you cannot implement the warning banner on your system,, adhesive banners will be available from the Technical and Electronic Information Department (call X6765) and may be attached directly to computer monitors.

Windows 95/98/NT or Macintosh: For these systems there is a patch you can download from http://www.lbl.gov/download/. Uncompress the file and read the readme file for instructions. After installation the required warning banner will be displayed whenever the system starts.

UNIX: Please see http://www.lbl.gov/ICSD/Security/tools-resources/banner-on-unix.htm for complete instructions.

All employees should take the time to install the banner on their computers. The number of banner downloads is being tracked so that compliance with the DOE requirement can be monitored.
