Standard Configurations Simplify Computer Buying and Tech Support If you've shopped for a computer either in a store, on the web or via advertisements the choices can be overwhelming. Multiply the situation by several thousand employees and the need for a standardized system is readily apparent. Because the integration and support of networked Personal Computers in the Lab computing environment can be extremely complex, a Lab PC standard has been developed. This standard configuration is the only PC configuration that is guaranteed to work with the Lab's standard software load (email, web browsers, calendaring software, Microsoft applications, LETS, FMS, etc.). In fact, employees who choose non-standard computers must acknowledge that the requested computer may not work properly in the Lab's computing environment; furthermore. Also, requests for non-standard system support from the centralized support organizations will be handled on a best-effort basis at substantial increased cost, if at all. To simplify both the purchase and support of desktop computers, the Lab has adopted standard configurations for desktop and laptop PCs and software. Prearranged agreements make it easy for Lab organizations to purchase the systems, which include a range of options and features. View information on Lab standards for desktop and laptop PCs, Macintoshes and UNIX systems. |
