New One-Stop Web Shop for Various Computer Accounts

The Computing Infrastructure Support Department, as part of its ongoing effort to make things easier for computer-using employees, has created a new site where employees can register for different accounts, including IMAP4 email, an electronic post office account (for receiving and sending email), Netscape Calendar, UNIX and the Novell servers. You can connect to the page by clicking on the New Employees icon on the main CIS help page (http://www.lbl.gov/help/) or by going directly to: http://www.lbl.gov/ICSD/CIS/accounts.html New accounts will usually be created within 24 hours of the request.

Here's a short description of what each account provides:

The IMAP4 email system is the central email system at the Laboratory. Accounts are free for all Lab employees and resident guests. IMAP4 allows email to be stored on the IMAP4 central server.

The Electronic Post Office, or EPO, is a Lab standard way of creating email addresses. Many types of accounts, including IMAP4 and Novell, require you have an EPO address. If you have an EPO entry, laboratory directory services (http://www.lbl.gov/ds/) shows your email address, and the Lab version of Netscape can also find your address. Remember, though, an EPO entry is not an email account; it is only a forwarding address.

Netscape Calendar: is the main scheduling system at the Lab. It is used for scheduling meetings between various Lab employees, as well as reserving meeting rooms and other resources. A Netscape Calendar account is free for all Lab employees and resident guests.

A central UNIX account resides on ux8 (Solaris) and ux5 (SunOS) for general scientific computing. Any Lab employee or resident guest can obtain an account, but there are charges for various associated services.

LBNL/ISS Access (UNIX ux10) provides a link to LETS, the Laboratory Employee Time Reporting System. LETS provides the capability to submit, approve and transmit employee time charged to the Berkeley Lab Payroll Unit. Ux10 also provides acces to IRIS (the Lab's data warehouse), the on-line Purchasing system, the Procurement Card system and a number of other administrative systems such as the HR and Financial systems.

Novell Accounts provide access to printers on the LBNL distributed printing system, access to Berkeley Lab corporate systems, and home directory file service space for up to 100MB at no cost.
