Netscape Messenger 4.51 Email is Faster, More Flexible

Netscape Messenger, the Lab's standard email application, is being upgraded with the rollout of version 4.51. This IMAP4 email system will be faster, more flexible and easier to access from remote locations. Here's a quick rundown of the new features:

Three-pane interface for better message management: All mail folders and newsgroups appear in a third folder pane for easier access and management. Panes can be adjusted to fit any screen, and messages can be filed by drag-and-drop editing.

Fast and accurate pinpoint addressing: Messenger allows users to seamlessly address mail from the composition window without hunting for contacts in a separate address book or corporate directory. If there is more than one match for the name, Messenger presents all possible matches along with identifying information such as organization, city and phone number to help users send mail to the correct person. Another oft-requested feature in this version is the ability to create multiple address books.

Multiple forwarding options: Users have the flexibility to forward a message as inline text, as quoted text, or as an attachment.

IMAP speed enhancements: IMAP users will enjoy performance enhancements with Messenger, such as faster header download over slow modem connections and faster display of messages with large attachments (because attachments are left on the server until needed).

Mail receipt confirmation: It's now possible to receive a return receipt from other Netscape Messenger 4.5x users, advising the sender when the recipient has opened the mail message.

Using Communicator information on your 3Com PalmPilot: Messenger users can synchronize address books and corporate directories with the PalmPilot, as well as read messages from the Inbox and compose mail on PalmPilot to be sent by Messenger.

Mail folders accessible from any location: All mail folders, including Trash, Sent, Drafts, and Templates, can be centrally stored on the IMAP4 mail server, giving users mail access from desktop computers in multiple locations.
