Anti-Virus Filter Checks Incoming Mail for Infections

News reports last month about security flaws in Microsoft Explorer and Netscape Navigator which would allow "trojan horses" to arrive hidden in incoming email have prompted several inquries about the Lab’s email system. According to Computer Protection Program Manager Jim Rothfuss, the Lab’s main email server runs an anti-virus program checking every incoming email for viruses and doesn't deliver messages which fail the scan. This program has been updated to catch the so-called "mime" or "long filename" attacks, too. Employees who bypass the main server to receive email, however, don't have this layer of protection, Rothfuss adds.
