Latest Anti-Virus Software Now Available For PCs

Lab employees who use PCs can now equip their machines with the latest version of the preferred anti-virus software, called F-PROT/Command AntiVirus. According to the Lab’s Computer Protection Program Manager, Jim Rothfuss, viruses are constantly proliferating and the best way to keep your system safe is to install the latest bug-fighting applications as they are released. New viruses are often designed to avoid detection by older versions of anti-virus programs. To check which version is on your machine, or to get the latest version of F-PROT/Command AntiVirus, visit the computer security page at: http://www.lbl.gov/ICSD/Security/tools/F-Prot.html

According to Rothfuss, the most common virus is the Word macro virus, which hides in and infects documents created using Microsoft Word. Unfortunately, the virus is truly cross-platform compatible and can easily migrate between Macintosh and PC systems. The good news is that the Lab’s main email server scans all messages, whether sent from within or without, for these viruses. Beware: if you aren't sending your outgoing mail to the Lab’s main mail server (smtp.lbl.gov), your mail will not get scanned. The Word macro virus accounts for about 90 percent of the viruses detected on the Lab’s mail servers.
