Apple
The Apple Operating System (OS) for the
Mac, provided
under a limited volume license, is available for purchase at an
academic discount. Software and updates are available by request from licenses@lbl.gov
Please check with the Mac/PC Support Group
via the
Help Desk for status of the latest release. They review each new
release
for conflicts with current systems/applications and for bugs prior to
release
to the Lab user community.
Notes: Starting with Mac OS v8.5, MacLinkPlus is
no longer included.
Other software: Many other products are
available
for the Mac, but are not carried under any of the general
Labwide.
Distribution: The Mac OS
cannot be
installed over the net and Apple authorizes duplication of Mac OS
software solely for purpose of making a backup copy. Licensees
may obtain a copy of the CD-ROM’s from licenses@lbl.gov for a small charge, request your administrator install
it for
you, or request assistance from the Help Desk. NERSC users call NERSC

Support.

SUN
LBNL provides the Solaris Operating System
(OS)
and the x-86 version to the Lab users under the Sun ScholarPac program,
with an additional site license covering a prepaid pack of other Sun
applications.
This program provides deeper discounts via educational pricing for
support
and maintenance of Sun products.
SUN
SOLARIS OS,
and SOLARIS X86 OS
Distribution:
The Solaris OS
can be obtained from the CIS
Unix Group
SUN
APPLICATIONS
- Unlimited Site Licenses
Distribution: Software is
downloadable from
the Sun Website. User must provide access key. SUN has a governor
installed
allowing download only to LBL’s various domains once the key has been
provided.
For access key, send a request to the CIS
Unix Group, or contact your local systems administrator.
OTHER
SUN SOFTWARE MAINTENANCE
Other Sun
software products can be supported separately at
a greatly
reduced price. Contact licenses@lbl.gov
for details.
SUN HARDWARE MAINTENANCE
Any Sun
equipment can be placed under the ScholarPac
maintenance agreement. Sun offers both Silver and Gold levels of
support. The cost will depend upon system configuration, and will
be individually quoted. Pricing requests may be sent to licenses@lbl.gov

No Labwide support agreement
exists at this
time for PC operating systems or for application software.
A bulk purchasing agreement exists to
enable purchases of Lab-recommended PC systems. COMPUTERS UNDER THIS
BOA MAY BE
PURCHASED BY DISTRIBUTED PURCHASING UNIT BUYERS. Purchase
of workstations under this BOA includes Microsoft Windows and Office
Professional.

MICROSOFT: Berkeley Lab does
not have a
volume discount or site license with Microsoft. Their products can be
purchased
individually and are available from any vendor.
NOTE: The national labs have been
specifically excluded
from Microsoft’s educational discount program, so you may not request
educational
pricing for any Microsoft product.
ALWAYS RETAIN YOUR LICENSE as proof of
ownership.

SGI SOFTWARE MAINTENANCE:
Participation in SGI's software support
program
is open to the full Lab user community. SGI offers the Lab government
discounted pricing. Maintenance costs vary by machine. Contact licenses@lbl.gov to request pricing.
Distribution: SGI software is
available via download from the SGI website for licensed users only.
SGI HARDWARE MAINTENANCE:

Note: If a machine goes out of warranty
before being placed on support, SGI requires a reinspection before
