Inside LBNL's Advanced Light Source

---------------

As we move away from a Cold War economy, we must change our priorities in order to maintain our way of life. In addition, other problems, such as fuel shortages and pollution, are growing. To solve these problems, we will need the best efforts of our scientists and engineers to develop new technologies. The Federal Government has mounted a tremendous effort to respond to these needs. It has directed its national laboratories (e.g., LBNL) to help industry to develop environmentally conscious technologies and materials.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has developed a plan to meet this challenge by using its unique research capabilities to make advances in basic and applied research. LBNL scientists work to understand the nature of matter and energy at the most fundamental levels. Historically, this type of research has led to new technologies that have had great social benefit. LBNL also has major programs in materials science, chemistry, earth sciences, biological and environmental sciences and plasma physics. LBNL is also working with industry in their research efforts. It has constructed facilities such as the Advanced Light Source and the National Electron Microscopy Center to help with the development of new technologies. These kinds of strategic basic and applied research are expected to have broad, practical applications for our future.
