This module is part of the Ethical, Legal and Social Issues in Science (ELSI) Project - a science and technology education program for grades 6-12 sponsored by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. This program provides students with access to current scientific research at LBNL and other scientific research facilities.

The Air Pollution module is being developed in partnership with the Knowledge Integration Environment (KIE) Project of the University of California School of Education. The KIE project is developing software and curricula for use in networked classrooms, building effective Internet tools for science learning, and working with scientists to encourage the development of World Wide Web materials appropriate for high school science students. The project is also studying student learning using these materials.

The KIE software can be used to provide conceptual and procedural guidance to analyze this information and to assist students in organizing, examining, and reflecting on issues. In addition, the software provides for electronic science discussions (via newsgroups) and support for teachers to customize the project modules as well as maintain profiles of the students' progress.

For further information about the KIE project,
please contact Steve Adams.

LBNL and UCB are developing collaborations with science researchers and teachers in other countries to expand this project's global significance. We are working to establish links with government agencies, other academic partners, and information sources to make this module a rich resource for both students and teachers. For further information, please contact Sylvia Spengler.
