More about Tumors

Through their lifetime, women experience various kinds of changes in the breasts. These changes usually occur during the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, and after menopause. These changes might include any of several types of breast lumps, such as a tumor. Most breast tumors (and other breast changes) are benign (not cancerous). A cancerous tumor is said to be malignant. Only a doctor can tell whether a tumor is malignant or benign.
Brain Tumor--In the brain scan at the left, no sign of a tumor is visible. The second scan (right ) was taken just three months later and shows a large area of brain cancer (in blue ). The patient died two months after the second scan was made.

Breast Tumor--This is a malignant tumor showing a type of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma. The arrow points to the center of the tumor. The light yellow areas surrounding the tumor are necrotic (dying) tissue in the surrounding portions of the breast.
