The Center for Science & Engineering Education at Berkeley Lab provides a structured tour program for students in 5th grade to:
  • Connect to the science curriculum in the schools and support teaching and learning the Science Standards for California public schools.
  • Motivate students to consider careers in science, computing sciences, engineering, and technology.
  • Target schools and teachers of science in Berkeley, Oakland, and West Contra Costa Unified School Districts.
  • Encourage research teams and groups to participate in the education outreach through the tour program and recognize their contributions.
Tour opportunities are offered from October through May. Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Thursdays are designated tour days.

A STRUCTURED TOUR EVENT:

The tours will typically take place between the hours of 10:00 AM and 1:30 PM and will be limited to 32 students. Essential components of a tour include:

  • Pre and post activities for the classroom
  • Orientation to Berkeley Lab
  • Hands-on activities introducing standards based concepts, principles, and theories appropriate to the grade level and linked to the school's science curriculum.
  • Meetings and discussions with scientists, engineers, and technical staff
  • Student evaluation of tour
  • Take home materials for students and accompanying adults
