The DOE ACTS Program at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab National Laboratory will include:
Teacher as Research Associate (TARA) Program Description: The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) DOE ACTS program will offer an eight-week Teacher as Research Associates (TARA) Academy for the summer of 2008 starting June 16 and ending August 8. The TARA is a mentored research experience in one of 18 scientific divisions at the Berkeley Lab. Assignments will be based on selected participant's academic preparation, teaching assignments, experiences and interests. Teachers of science, grades 5 to 12, with degrees in a science discipline, mathematics, or engineering, or with equivalent combination of teaching and academic coursework, are eligible. A review of the scientific programs at Berkeley Lab can be found athttp://www.lbl.gov/LBL-Programs/index.html Teachers will meet weekly with a master teacher in seminar on translating their research experience to the classroom through inquiry-based teaching and learning. Teachers will be asked to commit to three sequential years of participation. Teachers will be expected to be at Berkeley Lab for at least 40 hours each full program week, complete all program deliverables and make a final power point presentation. . Teachers will remain in communication during the academic year and report on progress toward their professional development and leadership plans.
