Visiting Faculty Program (VFP) - formerly the FaST program

Program Description

The Visiting Faculty Program (VFP), formerly called Faculty and Student Teams (FaST), is intended to support the professional development of current faculty members who have the desire to increase the competitiveness of their own independent research at their home institution through scientific research collaborations with DOE laboratory scientists.
Student participation is optional. Applying faculty members may invite up to two student participants from the faculty member's home academic institution, one of which may be a graduate student.

Full-time Faculty members in science or engineering from colleges or universities with limited research facilities or those serving underrepresented groups
Student team members must be invited to participate by the applying faculty member and must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Must be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student and must have completed at least one year as a matriculating undergraduate or graduate student.
- Must be 18 years or older at the start of the program
- Must have earned a high school diploma or GED
- May participate in a maximum of three VFP internships. This includes past participation in the FaST program.
Institutions with NSF funding may be eligible for supplemental funding to support VFP participants
US citizenship or permanent resident status required
Participants must have medical insurance during their time at the Lab

List of Schools not deemed to be "underrepresented in the nation's research enterprise" are NOT eligible to particpate in VFP.
CSEE interns are not allowed to take classes while participating in the program.

Please note: it is CSEE policy that interns of Lab relatives may not be placed in same division as Lab relative.

Potential VFP faculty members are strongly encouraged to make contact with a researcher at the Lab before applying

Scientists review applications and select teams based on their needs
Please note that selection and placements start well ahead of the application deadline - apply early to increase your chances of being selected

Complete the full ten-week program (approx. 40 hrs/wk), with no time off from start to finish (excluding weekends and Lab holidays)
CSEE interns can not take classes (including online) while participating in the program.
Complete entrance and exit surveys
Students submit a poster and a 6-8 page paper on their research activities
Faculty submit annual reports
Attend all scheduled events including lectures, tours and group activities
Complete all LBNL safety and procedural requirements
Participate in professional scientific meetings
