FaST (Faculty and Student Teams)

Program Description

  • This program, a collaboration between the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), places teams of one faculty member and 1-3 undergraduate students in paid internships with scientists or engineers on projects related to the Lab's research programs
  • Each faculty member must make a three-summer commitment; students may participate for one or two summers

Audience/Eligibility

  • Faculty members in science or engineering from colleges or universities with limited research facilities or those serving underrepresented groups
  • Student team members must meet the following eligibility requirements:
    • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student and completed at least one semester of college course work
    • Must be 18 years or older at the start of the program
    • Must have earned a high school diploma or GED
    • May participate in a maximum of two FaST internships
  • Institutions with NSF funding may be eligible for supplemental funding to support a FaST team
  • US citizenship or permanent resident status required
  • Participants must have medical insurance during their time at the Lab

Selection Process

  • Potential FaST faculty members are strongly encouraged to make contact with a researcher at the Lab before applying
  • Scientists review applications and select teams based on their needs
  • Please note that selection and placements start well ahead of the application deadline - apply early to increase your chances of being selected
  • Berkeley Lab will host at least four teams; more are possible with supplemental funding

 

Deliverables/
Requirements

  • Complete the full ten-week program
  • Faculty members complete three summers
  • Complete entrance and exit surveys
  • Students submit abstract, paper, and poster
  • Faculty submit annual reports
  • Faculty obtain NSF funding by end of third year
  • Attend all scheduled events including lectures, tours and group activities
  • Complete all LBNL safety and procedural requirements
