Second Campus Site Selection Process

Berkeley Lab is a member of the national laboratory system supported by the U.S. Department of Energy through its Office of Science. It is managed by the University of California. The University of California holds title to LBNL property and is the party involved in real estate transactions involving the Lab.

In the final two months of the process, the University and Lab staff will thoroughly review all information on each site compiled throughout the process.  A final decision on a preferred site is planned for late November 2011.  The University and the Department of Energy must approve the final decision and a plan for moving forward with the project.

Following selection of a preferred site, negotiations will occur regarding a financing and acquisition plan. Once the preferred site is identified, a California Environmental Quality Act and National Environmental Policy Act process will be undertaken, which includes public comment and hearings before a final decision is made on site acquisition. Planning for scientific programs to be located at the site, and design and construction appropriate to the site will follow, with anticipated occupancy in 2016.
