You do nothing. ITSD's Networking and Telecommunication Department (NTD) will contact all existing users via email or phone. To aid in the transition process, NTD will provide you with information on how to contact local carriers and assist you in changing your billing name from LBNL to an individual account. NTD will also provide you with current available pricing and service options.

I am a new user; what do I do now?

Please call ITSD's Networking and Telecommunication Department (NTD) at Ext. 7997 . NTD will provide all new high speed data access users with information on how to contact local carriers along with a copy of the Lab's reimbursement procedures as stated in the current policy.

Who is eligible to be reimbursed?

Only those employees identified by their Division Level Management as meeting the criteria in the policy or those otherwise required to have the service are eligible.  This is not a general benefit to LBNL - you must be specifically approved to receive this reimbursement.

How is DSL/cable currently provided?

ITSD currently contracts for high speed Internet access with carriers for the use of LBNL employees working offsite (including at home).  ITSD charges the provided project ID for the monthly carrier fee and additional charges.

How long will the transition take?

We expect to transition all new and current users over the next 3 to 6 months beginning April 4, 2005. All Lab DSL/cable users who have not transitioned to a personal carrier by September 30, 2005 will be disconnected.

Why is LBNL making this change?

First, the Lab is concerned about the high cost of this service to the Lab. Second, the Lab has concerns about "acceptable use" (according to the RPM)  regarding a Lab-managed high speed line in employee homes.

How does this change reduce costs to the Lab?

Employees can contract for a significantly lower cost under a personal use contract than LBNL, which is required to use a more expensive business-level agreement. Due to LBNL's incidental use policy, which does not extend to other members of your household, you will no longer be required to have a separate line for personal use in addition to your line for Lab business. LBNL will now reimburse you for 50% of the cost of your personal line. This will allow the partially reimbursed personal line to be used for both household and personal incidental use. Additional restrictions have also been placed on eligibility for this reimbursement.

How are reimbursements billed?

Reimbursements are billed to the employee's PID.

I am currently being reimbursed for my High Speed Line, how does this policy impact me?

This policy applies to both employees who had ITSD managed access, and employees being reimbursed. You will now require Division Level Management approval to be reimbursed and your reimbursement will be limited to 50% of approved charges.

The Division Director or designee of the organization that will pay for the reimbursement.

Will I be reimbursed for installation?

Yes, you will be reimbursed at 50%.

I am an existing Lab furnished DSL user.  Will I just be transferring the current service from the Lab's name to my name?

No.  The vendor will view this as a new service.  It will no longer be considered as a business service, but as a residential service. An installation process will be required.
