Supervisor Responsibilities at Berkeley Lab
This online course will help both new and experienced supervisors better understand key knowledge and responsibilities needed to be an effective scientific or operations supervisor at Berkeley Lab. The course is required for all new supervisors. It is structured around three core lessons, with a fourth lesson containing information specific to managing scientists. The lessons are as follows:
- Lesson 1: Institutional Responsibilities—this lesson addresses issues relating to Berkeley Lab mission, policies, ethical work standards, contract compliance, and more.
- Lesson 2: Operational Responsibilities—this lesson reviews supervisory operational accountabilities, in areas such as safety, security, managing funds, conflicts of interest, and signing privileges.
- Lesson 3: Managing Employees—this lesson provides guidelines for working with employees in a variety of management situations including recruiting and selection, performance management, taking corrective action, complying with EEO/Affirmative Action, union regulations, and more.
- Lesson 4: Managing Scientists, Additional Responsibilities (scientists only)—this lesson addresses key management responsibilities in regards to managing scientists, postdocs and graduate research students, in areas such as mentoring students, reporting inventions/transferring technology to market, and processing foreign visitors.
Supervisor Responsibilities at Berkeley Lab—written and developed by Berkeley Lab Learning Institute in collaboration with over 20 Laboratory subject matter experts—can be completed in one sitting or enables you to return multiple times, whichever fits your schedule best. It includes special “knowledge check” challenges to test what you know in certain kinds of situations.
